Challenge
Cincinnati Art Museum, one of the oldest museums in the country, had a wayfinding problem. Three large parks surround the museum building, and numerous roads connect the museum with nearby attractions. The variety of spaces made it difficult for visitors to find their way around. At the museum grounds, outdated signage added to the confusion.
Solution
Signage as sculpture. Studio Piko proposed a modular system of color-coded sign blocks that, when combined, create an immersive sculpture garden that makes use of the museum's outdoor space. Directions are provided by the opaque gray blocks, while the translucent color blocks allow for sculptural variation and let visitors see behind the signs. The new signage enhances empty grass areas around the museum and encourages young and old visitors to explore park spaces. Inside the museum, a similar system is adapted to wayfinding and artwork descriptions. The square shape of signs allows a variety of sign configurations and reduces production costs. A concept project for Cincinnati Art Museum.
